Back to the Future

My favourite movie of all time is Back to the Future. I love this film and I am pretty confident I know the dialogue inside out! Watching this film feels like being in the presence of old and familiar friends.

Marty McFly and Doc Brown spend most of the movies trying to avoid changing anything – for fear they would set off a chain reaction of events that could cause great damage to the future. Although they want to secure better lives for themselves and others, there is only so much they can do. After all, the future has been written and should not be changed.

Life can bring us many challenges and hardships to endure. They can come completely unexpected and shake us to our core. They can cause us to have regrets, experience life changes (some welcomed), cause us to make mistakes and even question who we are and what we are doing with our life.

Sometimes we are faced with situations where we feel there is no good outcome, perhaps because any decision we make could cause other events to spiral out of control, or because the situation has ripped up the future we had written for ourselves. In these cases, it’s easy to feel like hope is lost, our future has taken a darker path and we do not have the power to change it.

By the final scene of the third movie, Marty and Doc have discovered that the future is not written yet and we all have the power to change our own destinies.

Going through changes and not being able to see where we are going is hard, scary and frustrating. Although we may wish for a time machine to see our future, and learn from our future mistakes, we don’t have that option! Instead, we should learn from the mistakes we have made in the past to ensure we make a better future for ourselves.

“The future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one.” – Doc Brown
